The
Height Advantage
A
five star hotel at the highest altitude in the continent itself becomes
a fascinating tourism product
By
A CORRESPONDENT
In
the north are the arid mountains. In the south stands the snow clad
Mountain Nilgiri. Gusty wind makes the place look more adventurous. The
roaring of the Kali Gandaki punctuates the silence of the Marpha Valley
to the north east of which is located Jomsom -- the famous touristic
spot in the Annapurna region visited by above 60,000 tourists every year.
![]() |
| Jomsom Mountain Resort : Standing tall |
Few
houses, most of them for commercial purpose, are clustered nearby the
Jomsom airstrip. For any visitor, the sight of this place -- much
similar and much closer to the Tibetan Plateau --makes him forget about
the city-luxuries.
But,
around 15 minutes climb from Jomsom, he/she will realize how wrong he/she
was. Believe it: At an altitude of 2805 meters stands a locally
architectured five star hotel -- Jomsom Mountain Resort -- in this
remote district with the snowy mountains a stone throw away.
Sprawled
in an area of 150 roppanies, the resort has 102 rooms and has all the
facilities a five star hotel by international standard should have.
Central heating system, 24 hour room service, swimming pool, sauna,
jacuzzi, laundry service, and many more. So much so, this private
property also boasts of a banquet hall that can accommodate 250
participants.
The
resort's architecture is based on a Thakali Village concept and
perfectly blends in with the local surroundings. The dome shaped
reception center as if it were a monastery and the corridors with stone
walls, floors and ceilings give the impression of the Gumba society.
Each
room has a rustic look with the maximum use of stones. All the suites
and rooms showcase Tibetan Arts and Crafts furnishing and fabrics.
Apart
from its unique interior style, the hotel has many things to boast about.
Just 500 feet below the resort flows the Kali Gandaki that forms the
world's deepest gorge downstream. From every room one can view the
towering Nilgiri Mountains.
For
environment conscious clients, the resort has many things to prove that
it is a "green hotel." A combination of solar, wind and
hydropower will be used for power generation. "Even the diesel
generator we use for back-up power meets the international standards for
emission," says Captain R.P. Pradhan, a retired pilot who owns the
hotel.
![]() |
| Captain Pradhan : Green is Good |
The
resort's air-conditioning system and food-storage facilities does not
use the CFC-based refrigants since CFC (a mixture gas containing carbon)
depletes the ozone layer and contributes to global warming. The
executives in the hotel say that all waste from the kitchen, laundry and
sewage is properly treated and recycled. "All energy, fuel, water
requirements and liquid and solid effluent disposal meet the stringent
standards set by the World Bank," claims Pradhan.
Interestingly,
the construction work of the multi million dollar resort project began
only some two years ago and by now above 75 per cent of the work is
already over. Given the remoteness of the area where the hotel stands,
one wonders how could someone build a five star hotel there.
"Most
of the raw materials were flown in by helicopters," say the Hotel's
executives.
Based
on the philosophy of quality service, the hotel has its single and
double room priced at 160 and 170 US dollars respectively. The deluxe
rooms are charged 210 US Dollars while suites are tagged with the tariff
between 350 to 550 US Dollars.
Apart
from marketing in Europe and other markets, the resort also tries to
rope in clients visiting Kathmandu and Pokhara.
The
above 700 tourist rated hotels throughout the Kingdom can accommodate
above one million tourists in one year, hoteliers claim. Of the star
rated hotels throughout the nation, a little more than half a dozen are
five star ones.
But
Jomsom Mountain Resort has carved its image with a difference - standing
as a five star property at the highest altitude among all the hotels of
its category in the continent.

| HOW TO GET
THERE
Jomsom can be reached through trekking, small aircraft or helicopter as there are no motorable roads leading to Jomsom. About 8 daily flights connect Jomsom with Pokhara each flight taking about 20 minutes. Pokhara is in turn connected to Kathmandu by road and air which is about 30 minutes by air and 5 hours by road. Usually, a short flight takes the passengers from Kathmandu to Pokhara and then to Jomsom. The flights to Jomsom are held early in the morning when there are no clouds covering the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Ranges of the Himalayas, leaving most guests thrilled even before they reach Jomsom. |

Jomsom Information :
Info-01 :
Jomsom, (2,713m) is important for its strategic position along the popular Around Annapurna (Circuit) Trek route. It is also the starting point for many interesting treks like the Kagbeni, Marpha, Muktinath and Mustang treks. The Jomsom Trek is known for splendid mountain views and some of the best trekking hotels are found on this route.
Jomsom is the capital and administration headquarters of Mustang district, which stretches from the Tibetan border to Ghasa along the Kali Gandaki river. The deepest gorge in the world lies here along the Kali Gandaki as the river passes between two eight thousanders, Mt Annapurna and Mt Dhaulagiri.
From Jomsom you can enjoy the views of the Nilgiri peaks as well as Dhaulagiri, the sixth highest mountain in the world. Most of the hotels, along this trek route, are run by people of the Thakali tribes. They are mostly found in the mountainous regions between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Jomsom is the last Thakali village and there is a hospital here.
This trek is interesting for the change in terrain as you climb higher. The higher altitudes around Jomsom are marked by sparse vegetation and dry climate while the lower regions near Pokhara are lush green terraced hillsides. As you go higher, you will notice a remarkable change in the culture of the local populace. The inhabitants of the lower regions are Hindus while those in the upper mountainous regions are Buddhists. People who live in the highest regions of Nepal seem more Tibetan than Nepali.
Treks to Jomsom start from Naya Pul, which is an hour's drive from Pokhara. You can also drive on to Baglung and start the trek there and avoid a steep climb. You can trek to Jomsom and back in fourteen days. If your trek starts from Jomsom there are regular flights taking off from Pokhara for Jomsom. They leave in the early morning as later the high winds make flying impossible in the region.
Info-02 :
In the middle of high Himalayan settlements of Tibetan-speaking people is a village called Jomsom. Life here is a balance of hard work, and ancient culture. Jomsom, at an altitude of 2713 M., is often thought of as an attractive and even romantic example of high-altitude settlement. There may be no other resort in the world from where the Himalayan peaks can be admired so closely. Giants of the Himalayan Range like Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna Range seems almost at touching distance.
Many visitors find their most lasting impression of Nepal comes not from the ancient temples in the urban valleys but from visits to places like Jomsom and its exhilarating spiritual environment. Jomsom area is not only the most popular trekking destination in Nepal but also the gateway to Upper Mustang — "Kingdom" within the Hindu Kingdom of Nepal. Jomsom is also the gateway to The Muktinath shrine that holds great religious significance to both Buddhists and Hindus.
Mustang - The Forbidden Kingdom Information :
Info-01 :

Talk
about a breathtaking experience...They are headed for the next pass and on to their final destination of Lo Manthang, the capital of the Mustang region. The bottom line here is; everything that comes in to, or goes out of, Upper Mustang must be carried by either man or beast. The good news is, in the entire 780 sq. miles of this remote Nepalese kingdom, you'll never encounter a traffic jam. There are no roads.
In 1991, the Chinese-Nepalese Boundary treaty, redefined Nepal's northern borders and made Mustang a part of Nepal. Upper Mustang was, until then, the most inaccessible area in Nepal. Now, even doing the first part of the journey by car and plane, it is still not easy, but it is "do-able". This trip provides a totally unique experience because this kingdom exists in a time warp.
A trek to this part of Nepal requires serious advance planning and most treks are organized for two or more people. The normal trekking permit for most of the country is $5 US per week, but the permit for Mustang, from the town Kagbeni northwards, is US $500 per week and you must check in advance to see what time frame is needed for the various applications. Permission from the government to trek in this area is normally granted only 21 days in advance and the number of trekkers is limited.
Although, this is not the Nepal of Everest, with snow and ice, the weather has to be a prime consideration. For months, during and following the annual monsoon, the trails can become treacherous and prone to horrendous mudslides. The best weather is usually between March and November; then the days are warm and sunny but the dust and afternoon winds can get tedious.
Most people begin a trek from Kathmandu, and then proceed to Pokhara. The walk to Pokhara could take a week but can be done in about six hours by car. Hiring a car and driver is easily done and should run about $50- $75 US. A guide for the walk to Mustang can also be arranged in Kathmandu with no problem, but be sure to check that your guide is bonded and registered with the government. Costs vary but most guides will ask about $20 US per day, plus food and expenses. The guides speak good English as well as the local dialects.
The Nepalese government is very protective of the fragile environment of this region. Consequently, there are a slew of regulations regarding this trek, which change continually, and may, depending on how far you are going, actually include being accompanied by a government agent, but an astute guide will certainly be aware of the current status.
You'll usually need a day or two in Pokhara to get things organized but
it is a lovely little laid back town on a picturesque lake, that has
wonderful clean fresh air and you'll welcome the change from the crowds
and pollution of Kathmandu. Again, your guide will prove invaluable in
arranging accommodations and permits.
Now, all you have to do is wait for a flight to Jomsom.
The flight from to Jomson is "iffy" but should be a once a day event. Forget reservations. You just show up at the airport that morning (full of hope and optimism that that there will be room enough for you, your party and your gear), and hope that the weather is good at the Jomson airport. At 8000ft, this airport is closed during part of every day, and sometimes completely for several days because of treacherous high winds. The flight, around $50 US, is approximately an hour of sheer unadulterated terror, in a tiny little (12 seater) plane, but it does save at least five days of walking. We actually had a "stewardess" passing out hard candies and cotton balls to block the engine noise.
You know as soon as you step off the plane and regain your composure, that this will be an experience of a lifetime. You'll probably find that the airport limo is a horse drawn cart and there might be vendors selling apples on the runway. Nepal's answer to a "cowboy town"; Jomsom's "main street" is dirt, has wooden boardwalks and hitching posts and can be surprisingly busy. Lots of trekkers converge here because Jomson is one of the stops on the "Annapurna Circuit". Perhaps, consider staying a night. A good night's sleep before starting out and some socializing with fellow travelers could add much to the enjoyment of the trip.
IIn Jomson, there are formalities to be dealt with, both before you leave and again upon your return. Horses and/or porters can be procured here; the cost is about the same, but with horses you get a local horseman who knows the area very well. Now, with all arrangements finalized, and the peak of Nilgiri looming on the horizon, you are ready to enter into the "forbidden kingdom".A word of warning: beware of
"Mustang coffee"!
The locals will try to coerce you to imbibe this brew as you start on
the trail out of Jomson. This is very strong coffee laced with a
generous shot of local brandy. Combined with the altitude, it can be
incredibly potent!
It is a five to seven day walk from Jomson to the capital of Lo Manthang, and takes you through some awesome scenery, but remember this trip can be tailored to suit you. We first traveled northeast from Jomson, for about two hours along a dry riverbed, to Kagbeni. A large red gompa (monastery) makes Kagbeni easily recognized.
The temple at Muktinath makes an interesting walk from Kagbeni and can be done in less than a day. After a fairly steep climb to 3000 meters, this ancient temple appears, situated on the slope alongside the proverbial "babbling brook". This place with its enormous prayer wheel, is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. We encountered pilgrims who had walked for days to make pilgrimages here and I swear, I recognized some of the resident holy men from my "hippie" days in Cleveland, Ohio!
Mustang has been locked away for centuries, and is no doubt, one of the most interesting parts of Nepal. However the language, customs, and traditions of this region, are pure Tibetan.
From Kagbeni, you walk steep and winding trails through villages where most homes are fashioned from adobe, and the wealth of the individual is measured by the stacks of firewood stored on the rooftop. Sheep horns adorn whitewashed doorways and the people dress in the traditional, brightly striped Tibetan clothing. Prayer flags and chortens (small Tibetan temples) in red and black and white, brighten the landscape. Splashes of green from irrigated fields, and red cliff faces soaring above, offset the starkness of the sandy dry mountains. You can't help but get caught up in the openness and tranquility that surrounds you.
Along the trail, local homes will occasionally offer a meal and a room for the night. (A night spent here provides real insight into the lives of these mountain people.) Usually, the room will be an addition to the roof of the house, with a dirt floor, a candle for lighting, a straw mattress and a hole in the floor comprises the "en-suite". (Feeling a bit paranoid, I opted to sleep in full rain gear).
Food is prepared on a wood-burning stove fueled with yak dung and the essence of yak meat, drying on racks above the stove, adds to the overall ambiance. I was glad I had "trail mix" in my pack, but warmer, friendlier people, you will never meet.
After about five days of walking through villages lush with irrigated carpets of green maize and groves of willow trees, the capital Lo Manthang comes into view from beyond a steep pass. This is an ancient castle city guarded by huge walls of red and white brick. Despite the desolate and impoverished appearance and the very arid climate, the city still prospers.
The Champa Lha Kang monastery here dates from 1435 AD and it houses enormous mandalas (intricate circular designs of the universe) and thousands of beautiful Buddhas that, after many centuries, still retain their vibrant colors.
This ancient capital is, no doubt, unique and intriguing, but I found it a bit anti-climatic. For me, the best part of the trip was definitely the journey itself. Keep in mind; you decide the duration and final destination, and the return trip can be done by several different trails.
This trip is not for everyone. It's expensive and can be difficult at times, but if you want a taste of ancient Tibetan culture blended with the majesty and charm that is Nepal, then go to Mustang. Just remember: plan well ahead of time, don't overfill your pack and don't drink too much of that Mustang coffee!

Some text i found about the Yeti Man........ :
This is not a story of a snowman you make in winter from snow for entertainment. The story of Yeti is as mysterious as the story of Bigfoot in North America and Mapinguari in the Amazon. Sherpa people depict the Yeti as a human-like creature with long, shaggy hair in their traditional paintings. They consider the Yeti bigger and stronger creature than humans.
Yeti is a Sherpa word; Yah means rock and Teh means animal. Therefore the literal meaning of Yeti is a rock living animal. There are many folk stories among Sherpa communities about the existence of Yeti.
Nobody has seen it face to face, but there are several bizarre incidents that mountaineers have reported, such as hearing high-pitched whistles, strange looking footprints etc. Several scientific expeditions and people have tried to discover the Yeti. However, its existence has yet to be proven. Some of the famous climbers like Eric Shipton, Frank Smythe and John Hunt have reported that they had seen big foot prints like that of humans. Some of the mountaineers like Col. C.K. Howard and Don Whillans have even claimed the sighting of dark, human-like figures in the Himalayas.
According to the story told by the villagers near Mt. Everest, a Yeti attacked a Sherpa girl of a village while she was grazing her yaks in 1974. The villagers found several yaks killed with broken necks. The villagers believed the story told by the girl that an ape-like creature had twisted the neck of the yaks by grabbing the horns.
No matter what, many people still believe that the Yetis exist. The future will tell that whether the story of the existence of the Yetis is a mere legend or true story.
Here is a folk story recorded by Mr. Ram Kumar Panday, Professor of Geography at Tribhuvan University that tells how the Yetis were declined.
There was a beautiful village Alu Gaon popular for potatoes in Khumbu area, which remained always notorious for Yeti who troubled the villagers in the night and hiding in the day time. People of this village were fearful at night. People worked altogether all day in the farm and always late going back to the village. Yeti watched the villagers working. Why did villagers go in the field? There must be something to eat. When the villagers went back to their houses, the Yeti would then come down to try out all the jobs done by the villagers. The attempt to imitate the villagers work ended in destroying the farm. One day all the villagers gathered together to discuss the problem of Yeti's destruction. They prepared a drama of death for the Yeti, creating a drama of killing each other with wooden weapon. The Young Sherpa boys gathered together and kept water in some pots. They added poison to some Chhang pots (locally brewed beer the Yetis like very much) to drink and left real iron weapons for the Yeti to fight. The Sherpa boys acted with harmless wooden weapons and drank water, striking one another, falling down like a dead, they acted like in the battle fields (The Yetis watched the people doing that from a distance). As night fell, Yetis came down and fought like men but with real sharp weapons and drank poisoned Chhang (locally brewed beer). They fought like villagers did. They killed each other and many of them died in the battle. The one survivor was a pregnant Yeti who remained uphill. Sherpas of the Khumbu village think that Yetis found these days are the descendants of the same pregnant Yeti who could not come down due to advanced pregnancy. The Nepal Yak.....do it say : Muhhhhh !!! ?? ;-) :

Text i found about the Nepal Yak....... :
The Highest Living Mammals in the World - The Yaks
The Yaks are the mammal that lives at the highest elevation in the world. They can climb up as high as 20,000 ft.. Yaks can't live below 10,000 ft because of their thick coat and vulnerability to diseases. Their lungs are developed big to absorb more oxygen in higher altitudes. They weigh up to a 1,200 pound (550 kg).
Actually the Sherpa people call the male "Yak" and the female "Nak" or "Dri". However, generally speaking, Yak represents both for outsiders. Some wild yaks can still be found between the Nepal and Tibet border. They are one of the endangered species.
Yaks are among the most useful of animals. Without them the famous Trans-Himalayan trade between Nepal and Tibet would have been impossible. They can carry up to 220 lb. (100kg) load, and walk over the dangerous trails and snow-covered high Himalayan passes. In addition to being beasts of burden, they plow fields, provide meat, milk, butter, wool for clothing, and dung for fuel. Their bones are used to make various kinds of artifacts. The hair of the yak is used to make ropes, sacks, blankets, and tents. Nothing is wasted, even the horns are used to adorn doorways and roof tops.
One more interesting thing about the Yak. People in the mountains use the fresh blood of a Yak as medicine. They believe the blood can cure many diseases. Therefore, people come to the pastures twice a year to drink a live yak's fresh blood. They pay about $1 for one glassful of blood. In Tibetan mythology, Yaks are represented as the messengers of the gods living in high places.
Yaks are crossbred with cows. The crossbred offspring is called dzo (male) and dzomo (female). They can live in lower altitudes and are more tractable than the yaks.

MEDICAL MATTERS & ADVICE : Trekking in Nepal need not be considered risky affair as far as your health is concerned. Nevertheless. preventive measures such as a thorough medical check up and inocullations before you start trekking can save you from unexpected hazards. Since the remote places of Nepal are not supplied with necessities that are essential for modern medical facilities, and as the rescue and evacuation are measured in days, it is impressive to make a comprehensive First Aid Box consisting of basic drugs and accessories as part of the paraphernalia for trekking. Various trekking guide books and the pamphlet published by the Himalayan Rescue Association ivesbyou detailed information on a complete list of medical supplies. These guide books are easily available in the book-shops of kathmandu. In case of serious illness or injury, prompt evacuation to kathmandu is the best remedy. Modern dentistry is unknown in the hills of Nepal, so it is advised to have a checkup before departure from home. Toth fillings sometimes loosen in cold temperatures and at high altitudes, so it is recommended to have them checked.
FITNESS : All trekking demands a level of fitness that will enable one to put a good days walking, up hill and down. The best preparation for trekking is cycling, swimming, jogging, squash, tennish, and long walks involving up and down hill. Good physical conditioning will probably help for the maximum enjoyment of the treks.
ALTITUDE SICKNESS : Altitude sickness means the effect of altitude on those who ascend too rapidly to elevations above 3,000 meters. The initial symptoms of AMS are as following : - Nausea, vomiting - loss of apetite - insomnia/sleeplessness - Persistent headache - Dizziness, light headedness, confusion - Disorientation, drunken gait - Weakness, fatigue, lassitude, heavy legs - Sight swelling of hands and face - Breathlessness and Breathing irregularity - Reduced urine output These symptoms are to be taken very seriously. In case of appearence of any of the above symptoms any further ascent should be reconsidered; otherwise more serious problems can occur which can even cause death sometimes within a few hours, the only cure for the altitude sickness is to descend to a lower elevations immediately. Acclimatization by ascending to no more than 300 to 500 meters per day above 3,000 meters and the proper amount of rest are the best methods for prevention of AMS.
HIMALAYAN RESCUE ASSOCIATION : HRA is a nepalese voluntary organisation registered with his majestys Government to run a rescue service in the mountain tourist areas. SOME USEFUL SUGGESTIONS : During trekking sojourn in the hills and the mountains of Nepal you should be aware and remember that you aqre travelling back in time and into the wilderness not usually frequented by many foreigner, away from Nepal, policing. Although the people of the hills of Nepal are exceptionally hospitable, honest and freindly by any standards, the possibilities of some trekkers encountering bad elements who take advantage of foreigners, cannot be eleminated. It would be wise to exercise the following basic rules as regards secuirity and sefety during your trekking - Trekking organised through recognised Trekking Agent ensures comfort and convenience, safety and security and greately affords the unique experience. This approach to trekking not only prevents from any unforeseen hazards and accidents but also provide educational information and rewarding experiences on the moutains, people and life in rural Nepal. - All foreign nationals are required by law to pay their hotel, travel and trekking agents bill in foreign currency. Exchange your money through authorised banks/money changers only. Insist on a receipt when exchanging your money and retainm all exchange receipts with you. - Littering mars the purity of environment. Avoid the use of non- biodegradable items as much as possible. Yours attempts to burn oddments and carry out the unburnable ones will be a great help in the efforts to conserve the environment. - Avoid dispute with local people, most particularly when you are alone. Avoid drunkards and lunatics. - Do not encourage beggars by giving them money or other articles. - Be most economical with all fuel. Avoid hot showers which use firewood and discourage campfires. Avoid lodges using firewood and insist on use of kerosene for cooking to trekking agents. - We stongly recommended not to be travel insurance to cover against illness, accidents, loss and theft of items and materials, travel alternations and deviations, rescues and evacuations. - It is recommended not to travel alone in the remote areas while travelling in Nepal particularly in the case of females. If you donot have a fellow trekker as companion, you should engage a guide/porter except through a third party who has responsibility for the person engaged.
